Learn how to take care of your leather bag, so that it is as new as the first day.
It’s quite simple if we follow a basic set of steps. If you’re using it daily, you’ll need to hydrate the leather from time to time so that it will retain the properties we love so much about it, like feel, touch and elasticity.
To hydrate any skin of skin (yes, leather too!) the best thing you can use is a hydrating cream. You can apply it with a soft cotton cloth over all the surface of the bag – except on suede, which is particularly hard to clean and any hydrant can leave stains on it.
For suede pieces you should use a special suede brush. When you store your bag, it’s best to do it when it’s clean, inside a cotton bag; if possible a white one, which will ensure no staining of the leather.
Before putting it in the bag you can also fill it with crumpled tissue paper (if possible, also white to prevent staining).
This will help the bag maintain its shape. Lastly, storing it upright instead of stacked is always best, as stacking it on top or under other objects can also make it lose its shape.
How to clean the leather
Day-to-day dirt will normally come off easily just by wiping the leather with a cotton cloth. I have personally cleaned dirt off a light-colored leather bag using a wet magic sponge, after which I’ve wiped it with a damp piece of cloth to clean off any excess product from the sponge.
If you get a stain by accident or the bag gets wet under the rain, wipe it with a dry cloth and let it dry, but never use a source of heat (like hair dryers or radiators), as the heat will only harden and crack the leather.
Finally, remember to carry your makeup, hand sanitizer/cream, perfume or any other beauty product in a closed bag inside your leather bag; if the bag is stained by any product containing alcohol or grease, the damage will be irreversible.
Durability of leather
Leather is a very tough material; it will weather anything except for a few specific stains. Even if you leave it in a damp space and things… erm… grow on it, it will still be recovered.
First you need to wipe it with a damp cloth to clean any mildew that might have appeared on the surface.
Then leave it to dry at room temperature; remember never to apply direct heat. Lastly, you can use a bit of hydrating cream to moisturize the leather.
Another thing: even if we love the sun -especially at the beginning of the summer, when after a long winter we start to get a tan-, our leather bags hate it.
They really don’t benefit from sunbathing! If we ever leave a leather bag in the sun by mistake for a few hours (or even days), it will irreversibly discolor.
The sun quite literally kills the brilliance of any color on leather.
